In the first half of the 1900s radium was applied to watch, clock and other instrument dials to make them luminescent.
It was common practice for these items to be hand-painted by an assembly line made up of usually women. Many were instructed that the radium flowed from their brushes better if they lick the bristles between applications.
Unbeknownst to them, they were ingesting deadly Radium-226, which works its way into the bone where it quickly becomes cancerous. These women of course suffered massive and devastating effects.
A dark chapter in the history of misunderstood elements. 🖤
